Since 1885, Nereus has been the premier student rowing association in the Netherlands. Located in the heart of Amsterdam, Nereus’s top-notch facilities provides a home for many of Holland’s Olympians and best student rowers. Steeped in tradition, the Nereus boathouse is a protected historic monument and plays an important part of the Amsterdam’s sporting history. The boat house is located on the Amstel river, the body of water that provides Nereus rowers with pristine rowing conditions year-round. The second Nereus boathouse is located on the 2- kilometer Bosbaan rowing lake, which is shared with the Dutch National Rowing Federation.
Nereus aims to provide students rowers with an opportunity to excel both on and off the water. The rowing club attracts students from universities all over Amsterdam, with the majority of students studying at either the University of Amsterdam or Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. These world renown universities offer highly competitive Bachelor’s and Master’s programs of all types at an affordable price of around €2000 per year. Nereus is located within a 20-minute bike ride from either university. Both universities provide accommodation for both international and Dutch students, although some rowers seek accommodation off campus with a number of Nereus rowing houses located around Amsterdam.
Each year around 350 new female and male members join the association, making Nereus a hub of social activity. With both novice and experienced rowers joining Nerues, creating many different social and rowing activities for members. The student rowing association hosts various events year-round, including the world-famous Heineken Roeivierkamp, which attracts crews from all over the world to compete on the Amstel in a two-day tournament. Nereus crews also regularly compete at other international regattas including Henley Royal Regatta, The Head of the Charles and Ghent Regatta. In 2017, a complete Nereus Men’s student 8+ claimed Gold at World Cup I in Belgrade Serbia representing Holland, showing the world what Nereus has to offer.
